DonorsChoose: Meals, Math & More

When COVID-19 began to impact the United States, the Arnold & Winnie Palmer Foundation stepped forward to support devoted teachers and the students they empower. As part of our commitment to children's health, we recognize that, for many students, school is more than just a place for learning: it is a refuge, a shelter, a kitchen, and a place for positive affirmation. Thus, our broad-based COVID-19 response included the goal to keep teachers and students connected. We were able to address in partnership with the national non-profit organization, DonorsChoose.

68% of students lack sufficient resources to learn from home

Just prior to the onset of the crisis, the Arnold & Winnie Palmer Foundation had been fortunate to be able to host our Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard.  Other PGA TOUR events – which do such good in their local communities and nationally – faced cancellations and delays related to COVID.  We were delighted to support these TOUR communities through both hunger relief and funding to help students and teachers continue to connect. Our special support also honored the champions from the canceled events, who were not able to defend their titles.

"Keep Kids Learning has given me the opportunity to support my families in a way that I wouldn’t have been able to myself"
 Ms. Shepherd (PreK teacher, Maryland)

The DonorsChoose funding was focused on supporting teachers and students to connect and have the essential supplies needed for at-home learning.  Teachers from low income communities received funding to equip their students with the supplies they would need to continue learning at home.  Putting the power in the hands of the teachers, as has been the model of DonorsChoose since its funding by a school teacher from the Bronx in 2000, the children were able to receive books, art supplies, basic tools – such as pencil, paper, glue – and also provide food, and essential personal hygiene items.

"One of my students has become homeless since the school closure and therefore had almost nothing to complete her school work…. I was able to send her some new clothes, new shoes, some hygiene items, basic school supplies, and some food to help her stay focused"
— Ms. Fite (Grade 9, Fresno)

These supplies came none too soon as countless children were displaced during the crisis and needed the stability and support that the tumultuous situation required. At the Arnold & Winnie Palmer Foundation, we believe that this critical support would have pleased our founders, who were ever passionate about children’s health, well-being, and development.  Through our support – made possible by proceeds from the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard and generous donors like you – we are delighted to be able to continue on the path of compassion they began, ensuring every child has the opportunity for a bright and healthy future.
